Myoglobin

The myoglobin serum test measures myoglobin protein levels in the blood, which helps detect:

• Muscle injuries (rhabdomyolysis, trauma)
• Heart damage (early signs of a heart attack)

Elevated levels suggest:

• Heart attack or cardiac arrest
• Muscle breakdown from injury, excessive exercise, or certain diseases
• Kidney problems, as myoglobin buildup can lead to acute kidney injury

No special preparation is needed, but strenuous exercise before the test may temporarily elevate myoglobin levels.
