This test measures the concentration of antidiuretic hormone (also known as vasopressin) in the blood, which plays a crucial role in regulating the body’s retention of water and maintaining blood pressure.
It helps diagnose disorders of water balance, such as diabetes insipidus (causing excessive urination and thirst) or syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), where too much water is retained.
A blood sample is drawn and analyzed to measure vasopressin levels. In some cases, the test may be performed alongside fluid deprivation or water loading tests.
Low levels may suggest diabetes insipidus, while elevated levels could indicate SIADH or other conditions affecting the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. Interpretation requires consideration of sodium and osmolality levels.
