Frequently Asked Questions

The Toxoplasma IgG avidity serum test helps determine whether a Toxoplasma gondii infection occurred recently or in the distant past. It measures the strength of IgG antibodies produced against the parasite. A high avidity result suggests a past infection, while low avidity indicates a recent or ongoing infection. This distinction is essential during pregnancy to assess potential risks to the fetus.

The test is recommended when initial IgG and IgM results suggest a recent Toxoplasma infection. It is particularly used for pregnant women who test positive for Toxoplasma antibodies, as it helps assess whether the infection occurred before or during pregnancy. Early identification helps guide appropriate clinical management to prevent congenital transmission.

A blood sample is collected from the patient, and the sample is analyzed in a laboratory to determine the binding strength (avidity) of the IgG antibodies. The results help differentiate between a recent and a past infection. No special preparation is required before the test.

The test is highly reliable for distinguishing between recent and past infections when used in combination with IgG and IgM serological tests. However, it is most effective when performed within the first 16 weeks after infection. Beyond that period, IgG avidity may remain high, making it less effective in determining the timing of infection.

High avidity results suggest that the infection occurred more than four months ago, while low avidity results indicate that the infection likely occurred within the past three months. These results guide clinicians in deciding the best course of action, particularly for pregnant women and immunocompromised patients.
