This test determines the strength with which CMV-specific IgG antibodies bind to their target antigens, helping to distinguish between recent and past CMV infections.
It is particularly useful in pregnancy, where recent infection can have serious implications for the fetus. It may also help guide antiviral treatment decisions.
A blood sample is analyzed using immunoassays to assess IgG avidity, with results categorized as high or low avidity.
Low avidity indicates recent infection (within the past 3 months), while high avidity suggests infection occurred in the more distant past.
