ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate)

What is the ESR test?

The ESR test measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a test tube over an hour. A faster rate may indicate inflammation or infection.


Why is the test performed?

It helps diagnose conditions like infections, autoimmune diseases, and chronic inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.


How is the test conducted?

A small blood sample is taken from a vein and placed in a tube to measure the sedimentation rate.


What do abnormal results indicate?

A high ESR may indicate inflammation, infection, or chronic disease, while a low ESR is less common and may be due to conditions like sickle cell anemia.
