CULTURE & IDENTIFICATION-YEAST

The test cultures samples from blood, urine, sputum, or skin for fungal (yeast) infections, including Candida or Cryptococcus. It is a great test to diagnose any systemic fungal infection, a vaginal yeast infection, or a respiratory fungal disease.

It is based on the symptom whenever:

• Urine sample is taken for urinary tract infections (UTIs);
• Blood sample is taken from those with systemic infections;
• Skin scraping taken for fungal skin infection.
• Then incubate the sample to identify the kind of yeast involved in the cause of the infection.

Symptoms like, but not limited to, persistent itching, discharge (in vaginal infections), burning sensation, white patches in the mouth (oral thrush), and chronic fatigue (systemic infections).

It may take 2 to 5 days to get a result, depending on the yeast species and how fast the culture will grow.
