Fibrinogen Degradation Products (FDP)

The Fibrinogen Degradation Products (FDP) test measures the breakdown products of fibrin, which form when the body dissolves blood clots.

This test helps diagnose clotting disorders such as disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism. It is also useful in assessing excessive bleeding conditions.

A blood sample is collected and analyzed in the lab to detect fibrin degradation fragments, which indicate excessive clot formation and breakdown.

Elevated FDP levels suggest an abnormal clotting process, as seen in DIC, thrombosis, or liver disease. Low levels are typically normal but may need further evaluation if clotting issues persist.

Treatment depends on the underlying condition, which may involve anticoagulants, supportive therapy, or monitoring for further complications.
