Overview of Anti-Islet Cell Antibody with Titre in Aluva

The Anti Islet Cell Antibody (ICA) with Titre test is a blood test that detects antibodies directed against the insulin-producing islet cells of the pancreas. These antibodies are produced when the immune system mistakenly attacks pancreatic beta cells, leading to their gradual destruction and the development of Type 1 Diabetes. ICA is one of the earliest and most important markers of autoimmune diabetes and may be detectable months or even years before symptoms appear. The test not only identifies the presence of these antibodies but also measures their titre, providing additional information about the level of autoimmune activity and the risk of progression to clinical diabetes.

Who Should Get This Test Done?

This test may be recommended if individuals:

●     Have newly diagnosed diabetes and need to distinguish between Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.

●     Experience symptoms of diabetes, such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, or persistent fatigue.

●     Have borderline or mildly elevated blood sugar levels, are being evaluated for Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), or have gestational diabetes with suspected autoimmune involvement.

●     Have a personal or family history of autoimmune diseases, including autoimmune thyroid disease, Addison’s disease, coeliac disease, or Type 1 Diabetes.

●     Are a child or young adult with new-onset diabetes, or are participating in diabetes screening, prevention, or research programmes.

Why Consider This Test?

This test helps identify whether diabetes is caused by an autoimmune attack on the pancreas, which is the defining feature of Type 1 Diabetes. A positive ICA result supports the diagnosis of autoimmune diabetes and helps guide timely initiation of insulin therapy when required. The test is also valuable in identifying individuals at high risk of developing Type 1 Diabetes before symptoms appear, allowing closer monitoring and early intervention. The titre measurement provides additional prognostic information, as higher antibody levels are generally associated with a greater risk of progression to clinical diabetes. In adults who appear to have Type 2 Diabetes but respond poorly to oral medications, a positive ICA result may help identify Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), ensuring appropriate long-term management.

More Information

Islet cells are specialized cells within the pancreas that produce hormones responsible for regulating blood sugar levels, including insulin. In autoimmune diabetes, the immune system may produce antibodies that target these cells long before significant symptoms appear. Measuring the antibody titre offers a more detailed assessment of the immune response and may be used alongside other diabetes-related autoantibody tests to provide a comprehensive evaluation of pancreatic autoimmunity.
